Steve,

That is awfully old for a Yamaha. At least in this country. I don't know when they were first distributed here, but unless it has been hermetically sealed ( \:D ) all those years, it is at an age when many things can be worn out. Although some repairs could possibly be done it may well not be cost effective. I would certainly not rush into this one.

If you post a little more about the size and price range you are looking for, there are many knowldgeable people here who will be glad to help you.

Unless it were dirt cheap in price I'd avoid it.
It most certainly will require more than tuning especially if was played regularly. So you're also looking at regulation and repair for sure.

Here is more info on the 1955 Yamaha. It's a G3, the asking price is $4,000. I,m looking at it as a possible replacement for my 5 foot Cable baby grand in my recording studio. The cable records well as far as the tone goes, but I get click clack mechanical noise when the keys are let up. My piano tech. can't get rid of it. The Yamaha has a really nice sound. and a much improved bottom end due to the 6 foot size. but it has click clack too. Maybe on the Yamaha, it might be repairable. It,s hard to be objective when it sounds so nice. I'm not a player, so I can't comment on the action. Thanks again everyone for your help and advice....Steve C. Painted Sky Recording Studio... If it is a noise in the action then something within the motion of the action is causing it, if as you say its when the key comes up then the hammer has hit the string, so perhaps its loose leads in the keys or they are touching the adjacement key as each comes up, or perhaps loose leads in the damper levers - they come down with the key.

Over to you

I'd be willing to bet that the noise is due to excess side play in the keys such that they may be hitting one another when rising.

If this is in fact the case, you need to have the keys rebushed.

I'd be willing to bet this piano has loose tuning pins as well, unless they were already replaced. The older Yamahas aren't known for tight pins. Have a good tech check it out.
