Does anyone have tips for installing Kimball/Schwander springs in the mortises of the hammer butts ? I am trying to replace 12 broken springs in an upright. The holes for the broken springs are on the left side. It looks like I may have to drill some holes on the right side to attach the spring and keep tension in it. Can CA glue be used in the hole to help keep the spring in ? How much tension should be in the spring ?

For me you describe a regular European action, like this http://www.ptg.org/images/vert.gif

The existing spring wire comes out, you dont need CA, they never have it when the make those actions.

You take the spring, push the open end in to the one hole that is within the knoth, with the coil then up to the knotch you bend the tag back in the other hole and clip it off.

On Schwander butts, there are holes in the wood on either side of where the spring goes. A cord goes through the hole on one side, the eye of the loop in the spring, and through the hole on the other side. This is the method used on most butts with springs like this.

If you have a butt where the tail of the spring goes in a tiny hole in the butt, you may need a different spring for that butt, or a replacement butt.
