Hi All,

I have a 1907 Conover upright that I am tinkering with (and having a lot of fun \:\) ). I have refinished the cabinet and cleaned/regulated the action(or at least attempted to \:D ). The action has the older brass hammer flanges. I think this style of brass hammer flange rail is common on pianos of this age. However, the action does not have bridal straps; there is some kind of metal hook in the top of the jack that sort of fits into the hammer butt which is hollowed out to accept the metal hook; the ā€Lā€ shaped metal hook (looks like a small finish nail with a 90* bend) seems to serve the same function as the bridal straps. I did not notice any reference to this type of older action in the Reblitz book. The action seems to be in reasonably good condition considering its age. (And, the piano sounds surprisingly good).

Has anyone ever seen or had experience with this type of action?

I have not seen this, but now, whenever I find something odd like this, I go and do an on-line patent search for it. You can find out what they were thinking of by reading the patent.

I've seen it before. The hook keeps the jack in place when you pull the action, just as the bridle strap does. You have a well built piano. Regulate it as normal, but the hook should not need adjustment (it's likely cushioned by felt in the hammer butt, and the felt might need attention if worn.)
