One of the really leading pianists go to Hamburg, to choose a new Steinway D for our concert hall.

This is the condition of the piano they send, not complete:

the lock blocked
the short topstick scrape off the varnish

bend spoons to early
dampers in bass much earlier than the discant
dampers not high enough
the right pedalrod is at the end, you can only cut, when the dampers go deeper in time

all the keys are 3 g to heavy
they comes up with only 20 g
the keyes waggle like a ten years old piano

in the discant are 4 hammershanks with dull sound
many hammers are not in the string level
intonation bass and middle very unbalanced

you can all hammerflangescrews and wippenflangesrews turn a half rotation

and so on

The position of Steinway & Sons is now, the maestro picked out accurate this piano, so they cannot change anything.

I never seen this before.

Nor I. Did he select this piano at the factory or at a Steinway dealership?

Two years ago I visited the selection room at the Hamburg factory. The pianos I played were all what you would expect. Quite nice. I think I played 6 or 8 pianos (a mix of B's & D's).

Your comments are a surprise. From your description of the lateral play in the keys it almost sounds like a used instrument.

If it's new the piano is under warranty. Steinway will have to fix the problems or pay for someone else to do the work. German courts are pretty tough in cases where defective workmanship can be proven. I assume Austrian courts are too.

They refuse to do anything. Because, they (Mr. Amann) had work for 7 hours in Hamburg with Mr. B.....In what condition was the piano before? The price is 100.000,-, its not enough to be "quit nice".
For me is this not a new experience.
1990 Mr. Perahia (with Mr. Metha/Vienna Philh.Orch.) connot accept the quit new Steinway
1990 a other new Steinway D: the discantbridge is broken. It needs a half year for a Steinwayanswer.
1991, 3 month after the repair, "colapse" the tone.
1996 again a new Steinway D nobody want to play it - The italien salesman change it in 1997, this piano was ok.
1998 the next new D. It needs more than 4 years, Steinway repairs two times, the tune and the intonation will hold now for awhile.
And now 2003.
I still work on around 100 Steinways and many, many other grand pianos, I know the different problems. I ask me, stay I alone, only personally bad luck with the grand Steinway?

You've certainly have had bad luck with this series of Steinways. I've never heard of anyone else with this many problems.

Perhaps whomever selects the next concert grand should consider other makers. Maybe a Grotrian-Steinweg, Bluethner, Steingraeber or Fazioli?
