I have a question about caring for an old finish.
I have a 1919 DeKalb Miniature Grand, and I was wondering what kind of techniques/products would be best for freshing it up a bit.

Thanks!

Not enough information. It probably is somewhat wrinkled, may be lacquer or varnish. Gentle cleaning is the first step, a weak solution of Murphys Oil is OK (dilute according to directions). If the finish is wrinkled or otherwise damaged, polish will make it look worse. Try some Old English scratch cover instead, it does wonders. Always best to try an inconspicuous area first with any of these suggestions; I have seen Murphys strip an already weakened finish. Be careful

For the first question, It is very difficult to deal with old finishes. As a last resort, I use what is called Howard's Restor'a'finish. Apply with a soft cloth and for the really tough finish apply with oooo steel wool. Then wipe it off. This will color in scratches and smooth the finish a little. I only use this method if all else fails and I don't want to refinish the instrument. As stated before, "Be Careful"!

Sometimes a wax coating can work wonders on an old finish.

I don't know much about older finishing techniques though, so I won't get into that too much.

however, for cleaning of any finish, I would recommend a damp chamois cloth.
