Hi All,

Since I am not an experienced piano person, I was wondering if anyone could tell me if there is a substantial difference in tone quality between a 46.5 inch Chinese made studio upright and a 43 inch Japanese or Korean made console upright?

I know the taller the better but does 3.5 inches make that big of a difference?

It depends on what models you are talking about, but there tends to be a bigger difference between these smaller sizes than there is between larger sizes of upright. Consoles may have shortened actions that wear faster, and there is much more difference in string size among shorter pianos than there would be among larger ones.

Here is the deal: I have been looking at purchasing a 45 to 48 inch studio to upgrade from my 40 inch, 45 year old Conover Cable and I am having difficulty finding a studio in the style of cabinet I want. I guess you might say I want a studio in a decorator console style cabinet.

I ran across a used, (10 year old) Korean made samick 43 inch console in a nice cabinet like I want. Although it is not the studio size I wanted it may be a good piano at a good buy ($1900). I have not looked at it or played it yet but it seems to be a prospect at this point in time.

I'm aslo considering a new 47 inch Hamilton ($4500), a 46.5 Kawai ($6000) and a 46.5 kohler and Campbell ($4000).
