An I&P 5' baby grand I was given has two broken keys, each at the balance rail key pin section, where the wood of the key passes around the pin. Is repair possible for the keys, or must they be replaced? They are F21 and F#22. Also, are hammers and other action parts available for these pianos?
I know the piano has little intrinsic value, but it was free and will be an aid as I learn to tune and repair.

To repair keys broken at the balance rail pin, first remove the key, use tightbond glue and clamp the pieces well, making sure they are as close to original alignment as possible. Once the glue is dry, glue a thin piece of cardboard on each side of the key, covering the break point by 1" on each side. (a business card cut to shape works well). This further supports the joint and lessens the chance of it breaking again.

You may need to level the key when you put it back on the key frame.

P. S. - This can be done on the road using super glue and quick set, but the joint won't be as strong. ;\)

Bob's advice is right on.
If for some reason it turns out the key is too broken to repair, most of the better supply houses (like American Piano Supply or Schaff) can replace a broken key using the original (or two adjacent keys) as a sample.

Thanks for the advice. I'll give it a try. The business card part came as a surprise. While I thought of using something glued to the sides to help buttress a repair, I never thought business cards would have the necessary strength. And here I was, going through my junk pile out in the garage, seeking out a thin piece of steel to cut to size.
