If there is a way for you to physically see the piano and take a competent piano technician with you, that is the best thing you could do.

Not knowing what your expectations of the instrument are going to be it is difficult to say whether it will be ideal for you.

Definitely ask for more pictures:

1. Close up of where the strings cross over the bridge.

2. Pictures of the soundboard. Must show each part and both from above the piano and from below.

3. Pictures of the tuning pin area.

4. Pictures of the action and also from the keybed to the inside of the piano with a good detailed picture of the damper lever system.

5. A ownership history, if possible. Service records. Even a video or audio of each note being played so you can listen for ringing keys or notes that sound wild, or that sound like they are very out of tune.

Without more information, I would suggest you look to a more modern piano. It may have been a fine instrument 127 years ago, but if it is in original condition without any replacement of parts it may not be a piano that is pleasant to listen to or play.

I like to ask for the name and phone number of thier tech, and ask for some information.

This is a good way to find out if it has been maintained.

These old Viennese grands are the equivalent of the old English birdcage uprights and square grands.
Cannot be tuned to current concert pitch.
Cannot be regulated to consistency of touch.
Will not hold a tune even at their designed normal pitch.
Impossible to obtain replacement parts for.
As a decorator piece curio they are interesting.
As an instrument they are horrible.
