Hi,

I've got a really nice, well maintained Kawai KG2-c (1980) and I'm wondering about replacing the hammers with new ones.

I've played it a lot over the last 28 years. And had it voiced 2 or 3 times

They're sounding pretty harsh and my technician is thinking about 1 more voicing or biting the bullet and replacing the hammers, because there isn't much more felt to work with.

I trust my technician, I'm just curious.

What would be the best hammers for this piano?
Does anyone know the approximate cost, for say Renner hammers, or if they are the ones to get? Any info and opinions would be greatly appreciated.

No offence but No, you don't trust your tech. Ask 10 different techs and you will probably get 10 different answers. If you have been satisfied with your techs service for a while and trust him then do what he says. A lot of different opinions will only confuse you.

Hi Mark:

You can call me at the shop or drop by and I can have you try/hear several options. I recall you really liked Ari's hammers last time I saw you. You can then have your tech follow up.

Take care,

Steve

A 28 year old Kawai could easily need new hammers.

You might consider Kawai hammers.

Mark,

It is possible for your technician to order replacement hammers from Kawai, but our replacements are not quite like the original hammers, so are not necessarily the best choice for an older Kawai like this.

Brooks Limited in CT has the hammer drilling specifications for Kawai models, and can supply excellent Abel hammers that are a very close match to the originals in this piano. They tend to need minimal voicing work to get them up to their potential.

Ask your technician if he can order Abels from Brooks Ltd. They may have another distributor in Canada, if your tech doesn't order from the 'States.
