I've got an old Baldwin grand about 5'8" and the serial number on the plate says H37381. The Baldwin website says the piano was built in 1920. What does the H in front of the number mean? Does this mean that this is a Baldwin Model 'H'

What's the scale? That's the letter or letters cast into the plate near the lowest bass hitchpins. How many bass strings does it have?

20 notes on the bass bridge
7 notes with wound strings on tenor bridge

There are no letters cast into the plate.

It's probably an E There's no scale designation for it, but it has 20 bass notes.

Ed,
I have the same grand, H44476 (1923). It originally was ebony finish. When it was rebuilt, the old black finish was stripped, and the most gorgeous mahogany was revealed. It turned out to be a very nice piano.
