Are tone and touch intertwined (at least psychologically)? I'll try my best to explain this idea and then you can tell me if you think it makes sense. I played several Mason BBs recently. The first two were somewhat brighter(or more brilliant, louder and glassy in the treble) than I prefer. I also felt the action was a little too light and had some difficulty playing softly (although I also thought this might be due to playing on longer keys than I am accustomed to). Today, I played two mellower BBs and they both felt a little firmer and there was no control problem.

The salesperson felt there can be a connection between brightness and perceived touchweight. I say "perceived" because the actual touchweight (as measured by a someone using the little weights) I assume is completely independent of tone. I may be confusing brightness with loudness (I'll leave that to your replies), but it seems to me to be true that the brighter a piano is, the less effort is required to play at a certain volume, so the perceived touchweight is affected by the tone.

I'm very interested in your input on this.
Thank you

It's more the power (volume) that changes perceived touch weight. Bright pianos will seem lighter than mellow pianos as well, but to a lesser extent. The power of a piano can be increased by hardening the center of the hammer around the molding and leaving the outer felt untouched. This also increases dynamic range (the changing of tone from soft to loud notes). A powerful piano will seem to have a markedly softer touch weight because less key presure will be required to attain the same volume.
