I looked into it when Apple made 3rd party application development available. It turns out that the microphone sampling rate is limited to 8000 samples per second. This is fine for voice, but it does not quite allow pitch determination for the highest notes on a piano. The sample rate must be at least double and preferably triple the highest frequency you want to measure.
There are several guitar tuners for the iPhone. But until Apple raises the sample rate limit, a full-range piano tuning device is not possible.

Tunic OnlyPure (the piano version of the Tunic software) is available for the iPhone now. iPhone version 2.0.2 upwards supports sample rates up to 44.1 kHz, so no problem to use it for piano tuning. You can try Tunic Guitar Free (available shortly on the App Store in iTunes) to get an idea of the look and feel of the program. Tunic OnlyPure will at the moment not appear on the App Store, since it is only intended for professional piano tuners, and is available through ad hoc distribution. You can get more information about the program on our homepage. Best regards, Bernhard Stopper http://www.piano-stopper.de
