Anyone fix clicking plastic damper flanges on a M&H 52" vertical from the 1970's?

The best fix would be to replace the entire set of damper flanges in your Mason and Hamlin.

Are you sure the flanges are plastic? I thought they were wood, though I may be wrong. If they are indeed plastic, replacing them is the way to go.

Another thing to check is sostenuto interference. That model has a sostenuto pedal (which can cause way more trouble than it's worth!).

Here's one thing to check:

What might be clicking are the wires coming out of the bottom of the damper levers which are used by the sostenuto to catch the damper levers. These wires are typically positioned between the wippen support flanges and sometimes touch them when they are out of position, causing the clicking you are hearing. The wires need to be slightly repositioned in order to clear the flanges.

We have several of these pianos at the University where I work. This is a pretty commom problem but fortunately, it's very easy to fix.

Good luck.

I tried moving the sostenuto wires. That did not help. I think some damper levers travel further than others in the mortise and click against the flanges whan the key is depreseed and released.
