Has anyone out there taken the "Randy Potter Schhool of Piano Technology" course. I'm thinking of taking it, but I don't know if it's as good as it claims to be.

Hi Eflat: According to the people I have talked to who have taken Randy's course, they speak highly of it. I have attended a number of his lectures at our Piano Technicians Guild conventions and was impressed with his knowledge. I don't think you would go wrong, but think also about these things: It will take a long time (years) to acquire the knowledge and technique to become an experienced tech. Along with the correspondence course it would be helpful to work with someone on a one on one basis to reinforce what you are learning. Hands on with someone at your side can be a worthwhile adjunct to his material and will speed up the process greatly. PNO2NER

Potter's Course is the best that there is. Period.... go to your reference Library and look up Keyboard Magazine. November 1990

I've though about something like this to piddle with when I retire in a few years. I just don't see how one can become a proficient tuner, let alone a decent tech, without an apprenticeship.

How does one go about apprenticing himself to a guild member?

Thomas,

That article can be found on the Randy Potter school website. Randy Potter Keyboard Magizine Article

Jolly, I think apprenticing would just be a matter of finding a tech in your area who's willing to take you on, or finding a couple of old uprights or something in your area and start picking them apart. Perhaps by contacting the guild or visiting this website Piano Technician's Guild you may find out more.

I must admit that this is something that has peeked my interest as well. Also viewing Dwain Lee's rebuilding posts on his old Knabe upright threads on the forum has wetted my appetite even more.
