Just download tunelab pro for free! It's way better than the Peterson strobe tuner. http://www.tunelab-world.com/

It helps to know that you download the Tune Lab Pro file and run it in demo mode. Don't look for a separate free version like I did. Doah!

True! Although the demo mode is exactly the same program but with the added compulsory stand-up-and-stretch break feature. For beginning tuners this could be a good thing. Its good to take lots of breaks when your learning!

I ear tuned from 1968 to 1974 when I got a Peterson Strobe Tuner - my tunings were not so good after the purchase so I sold it a year later and it is now very old technology. Tune lab or a SAT 1 is much better. Maybe your tech can help you learn how to properly use it so that it enhances your hearing abilities and does not become your guide dog. Sorry, guide dog is not a good analogy as a guide dog will lead his master with great accuracy.

What kind of electronic tuner do I recommend? One attached to a good human tuner would be my choice!
(Sorry, couldn't resist :>)

The very best electronic tuner is the low wattage one between your ears.
('Couldn't resist that one either)

The only problem with the tuner between the ears is the uncontrollable chatter. (I could resist but didn't)

For many years, I have tuned by ear, and basically still do. I tune for a local college that is extremely picky and they also play host to the local symphony. The symphony and the college orchestra both tune off-stage and make the show of tuning on stage before the perfomance, though they check themselves again for accuarcy on stage, the bulk of the tuning is done in the back room. They regularly check my tuning by a quartz tuner and ask that I do the same. Though I still have the fork I purchased and have used for nearly forty years, I set the pitch to the quartz tuner and then check myself. I am happy to say, that I nearly always am extremely close to the tuner even when working by ear. But when doing a major pitch raise on older pianos, the tuner is a nice added tool. I and several of my tuner friends have found the less expensive Korg CA-30 to be excellent for this work. They can be gotten for under $20 on sale and work very well. Their response time works well for tuning a piano, while others we have tried seem to have a different time of response and so seem to be clumsy. So.. that's what we use... but it is no substitute for ear tuning, just an aid. My humble opinion
