I have a chip that is visible when the fallboard is up. It is very small, about 1/4" long, but is on the outside edge.

So you only see it when you are playing the piano...

I would like to do the simplest repair possible. Is there some kind of a color pencil product that I can use to fill this chip, then sand and polish to gloss?

Unfortunately, there is no simple repair for a chip in what I presume to be polyester, although you didn't specify.

It will have to be filled, leveled, sanded, polished and buffed to a gloss finish. This is something you might want to have repaired by someone experienced in this kind of touch up and who will have the proper materials and expertise.

I don't know if it's polyester or not. It is very small (but very visible).

It's a Yamaha. It's polyester. Get a professional.

It is not a Yamaha (my Yamaha is a DP). It is a Schafer & Sons 6' 9" grand (Samick version)
