Today......

When, you had spent a lot of time saving your best tuning onto RCT that I had done on the Bosendorfer at the college I service for, put your glasses on, pull up that tuning on RCT. You tune the piano, get about 3/4 done, check it a little bit and think, hmmm, this isn't sounding like what I had saved. So, you look again and that's when you realize that you had instead pulled up a Baldwin SF tuning that you had saved instead of the Bose tuning.

It wasn't bad but, I did have to change a few things. Murphy strikes again!

Here's mine. Measuring the pitch which is way flat with my strobe. Writing it down on the sheet. Forgetting, and leaving the thing set at -8C or something...tuning half the piano before realizing my error. Starting over.

Speaking silently to myself about this.

when you open the car door and are blasted with a sweet petroleum smell and realize you didn't get the lid on the ProTek snugged down AGAIN. There goes another 50 bucks.

Hahahaha Sam!!! I'd forgotten!! Something like that happened to me while driving down the highway about a month ago. The spray smell permeated my entire car. I kept wondering, what in the hell is that smell?? Then, it hit me!!! By the time I had figured it out, pulled off the highway to check it, most of a whole brand new can of ProTek had been sprayed away into my trunk and stunk for about a day or so...

Thanks for the laugh!!! I'm glad I'm not the only one! \:D

or when you CA glue gets busted open in the storage case and you have a mass of bridle tapes, felt, shanks and spare regulation tools glued solid to the bottom of the box.

RPD's story reminded me about pitch-raising a Gulbransen spinet last week. Got up to the tenor break and went into TuneLab's Overpull page to change the percent from 12 to 25. Realized I had tuned the whole bass with it set to 25.

When, you open a gallon of milk, the cap slips out of your fingers, you go to grab for it sloshing the milk all over in your attempt to catch it. It falls anyway, hits your foot, goes into the roll mode and rolls 20 feet away around a corner, out of sight, and of course, goes into hiding under someone's pair of stinky shoes.

Jerry, also when the tuning hammer slips out of your fingers while moving from one pin to another, drops on the keyboard... and the owner is watching.

The kids were curious what I wanted from the laundry room.

At least they learned a new word for the day.

...when the church basement piano is a Hobart M. Cable console with a six-digit serial number. However, there is a huge space between the third and fourth digits. So, as you're tuning, you constantly stare at those last three digits, which read...

when you chow down on a jr whopper with one hand steering with the other, get to your next appointment, chat with the customer and pull out a pen from your breast pocket and slice of tomato comes with it... (happened today)

when your missing tuning fork pouch turns up in a P-22 in a HS practice room 60 miles away and the vocal director emails and asks, "missing anything?"

Sam, you're just to damn funny. Almost every time I read something from you, it reminds me of something else that happened to me.

.....Better to have it drop into your pocket I say, instead of half the burger falling onto your nice BLUE now red,(catsup) white,(mayo) yellow (mustard) and whatever else was in the thing as a nice LARGE stain on your shirt for the rest of the day because you are nowhere near home! Or, until at least, you can use water! Then, after using the water, you're half drenched, wet and cold cause it's mid winter!

when you wear white shorts, work on an old upright with 1/2 inch of dust, abstractly scratch your, ah, nethers and notice it in the mirror at the next appointment. I hate it when that happens.

99% of my customers are regulars or refered by regulars. They come to expect a bit of ecentric behaivor from the piano man.

We have 2 piano dealers here. One sells the Kawai, Schimmel and other brands. The other sells Yamaha and other brands. I try and be fair to both dealers because I do like them both and I like both products to a point.

Usually, the client goes in and tells one dealer that I sent them in there and then tells the competition the same thing. I retain my customer that way once they make the purchase. Fine and dandy.

But, what I hate, is when one of the dealers calls me complaining that I didn't "only recommend them."

Ok, I will, if you "only recommend me."

Now that I'm a tech, I often remember my former tech's request for someplace to wash his hands when he was done, and I showed him to the kitchen. I realize now that, being on the road all day, he might have liked to use the bathroom!!

Or instead of having it land on your shirt, having it land in your lap as you drive, then you wash it all off and wonder if your customer thinks you wet your pants? \:D

...when your last tuning of a very long day is a 1958 Lester studio, over 1/4 step flat, with excessive false beats in the upper 3 octaves, with a nauseating bright tone, without a kneeboard, in a high school classroom, next to a sunny window, next to the forced hot air blower fan, on a 75-degree day, where the automatic room lights turn off every 5 minutes if you don't get up from the bench every 4 1/2 minutes to wave your tuning wrench at the motion sensor? Did I mention the matching bench?

when you get a call from that retired "concert pianist" with the Acro spinet and he/she claims that one note has this awful ring since you tuned it. Get to the house, the old codger bangs on A4 and YOU can hear the feedback from their hearing aid across the room...

Jerry, I hate this the most. They should understand how difficult it is to arrange a schedule. What do you do in this case?

I even had a few who pretended to be inside their apartments because nobody answered the door when I kept ringing the bell, but I saw some movements inside through the door peeker.

Another thing is when you call to inform that you'll just be a few minutes late and they say "we'll do it another time." That always lets me regret having called in the first place. If I had just turned up around 10 minutes late, they would have let me in anyway.

Yesterday, I was half way though a tuning when the customer said she had to take a conference call using her computer. Her computer was 5 feet from the piano. She said, "don't worry, I'll put phone the on mute and you can still tune!" Every time she needed to chat on the conference call, she would tell me to stop tuning, release the mute on the phone, chat for a minute, then mute the phone and I could continue tuning. We went though this hilarious exercise a dozen times before I finished tuning!

I called the customer the night before to confirm my first appointment of three - the customer said "can you come 45 min later?". I had some time built in to my schedule so I said ok. I get to her house, 45 min later as she said, and she's not home. I call her, and she's still 1/2 hour away. Gave me time to read the paper - and while I sat in her drive, a neighbor saw my piano tuner car sign and scheduled a tuning!

I was NOT very nice about it Junmer. I don't take much crap and inconsideration from anyone. I told her point blank how rude and inconsiderate it was. It's one thing if it were a funeral or sickness or something but, they just simply decided they wanted it tuned at another time.

Only, because I'd been tuning this piano for 20 + years and never had a problem, I did not charge them along with the fact that she'd only been there for 2 weeks. But, I did tell her this; "you tell that music director that if this ever happens again, they will be getting a bill for a full tuning." She said to me, rather sarcastically, well, we are rescheduling you know! I said, just as sarcastically back, you don't get it do you?? Get what she said? Get the fact, that I just lost $120! I said, YOU, give me $120 out of you pocket right now. HUH? I said, give me $120! She wasn't sure what to think.. Then, I added, see? That is exactly what you and your church just did to me and my income for today. How does it feel? I can't schedule anyone else into this time slot now, I'm already here! "Ohhhh, I see, I'm sorry," she said." Ya, to late now, I added, thanks. Just remember that for the next time around...

That's how I handled it.. ;-)
