I posted not long ago about the heavy key touch on my Kawai grand piano. Today, a tech came to check out the piano. He says there is nothing wrong with the piano action whatsoever, it is simply that the keys are heavy. The solution he suggests is that he will put some lead weight under every key to reduce the weight and achieve the desired weight. I have never heard of this before. Could some piano tech on the board comment on it?

My tech says that he doesn't think lubricating all the joints to remove friction would significantly change the key weight. Does this sound right?

Also the weight of keys on my piano is about 68 g on all the keys. Is this considered too heavy? I certainly feel heavy. Many thanks.

Hi Kin: There are many questions one would ask before giving an opinion. How long have you had the piano? How new is it? Has it always been this way, or did it just begin happening? How do other Kawai grands of the same model feel? Its always hard to give a long distance answer, but here goes: The touchweight should be around 50 grams, so your figure of 68 seems quite high. The first thing to look at is friction, which if excessive will cause a heavy touch. If this checks out OK, then weighting the keys is an answer, but it begs the question, was the piano made this way, or has something happened since it was put into service? It might be worth your while to get another opinion from someone familiar with the Stanwood system of measuring and correcting keyweight. This is a recognized technique of very precisely dealing with your problem. Not every technician will be familiar or experienced, but persistance will pay off in getting the correct answer. Hope this helps....PNO2NER.

I'm no tech, just an amateur pianist/teacher for decades. Your 68 is very, very high indeed. Mine is currently weighted from 56 to around 52. Kawai versus Yamaha it seems Kawai tends to have heavier touch. That's one of the things that I prefer K over Y; but certainly not that high like yours. FWIW.

I just tuned a Kawai grand today that had a very heavy action. It played like a mack truck. This was a shorter model, so the keys are on the short side as well, which doesn't help.
