Does anyone have a recommendation on a piano technician school in the Midwest?

How many hours of course work is involved to become certified?

Thanks,

There's a brand-new one opening in Chicago!

Check them out:

Considering the people involved, I would bet that the training would be top-notch

So, this would be a good thing? I'm actually interested. It would be nice to go to a place where hands on schooling is offered, instead of mail order stuff... Interesting.

Now understand that this is only from me...

It's my feeling that learning aural tuning without someone looking over your shoulder and keeping you on track is a HUGE time-waster. Doesn't mean it can't be done, but I think a better use of someone's time would be to get a Verituner, learn how to use it well, (while learning how to set a stable tuning) and THEN using the machine, learn how to aurally tune the temperament.

The nuts-and bolts work of the piano have similar pitfalls... the learning curve can be streamlined by having a teacher around to reduce the trial and error time to get a process right.

Many learning technicians don't have the ability to drop everything and go to school, so there will always be a need for alternate learning venues, but if you have a chance, check out the schools.

Your mileage my vary -

Hey Ron, I agree with you totally. Can't the Verituner be set to tune in a temperment sequence? After tuning that way and listening to all the checks as you go, switching to aural should be sooo much easier.

When I started learning aural tuning, I was using an Accu-tuner. I would tune the temp by ear andcheck against the lights. Once I got it to within PTG test standards, I felt I now had a good knowledge of aural tuning. I also have the Randy Potter course, as a matter of fact I have bunch of the old mail order type course. I collect old piano stuff. Many tuning texts as well. {Jorgeson included]
