First time poster here and I have a question I hope somebody might be able to help me with.

I'm currently in the market for a piano and one of the models I'm interested in is the Baldwin 243. I recently looked at a new one and noticed that when the soft pedal is depressed, some keys drop slightly while others remain in approximately the same location giving the keyboard an uneven look. Is this something that's normal with this model or is it an indication of something being wrong? If it is normal, what causes it? Seems I've seen this on some verticals in the past.

Thanks in advance

A very minor matter having to do with a quick and simple action adjustment (bridle tapes). Even in a very well regulated vertical action, some keys may "wink" (move down momentarily a very small amount) when the soft pedal is pushed all the way. Don't worry about it. Many if not most pianists stay away from the soft pedal on an upright, anyway, since it works by essentially upsetting the action's regulation and introducing "lost motion" which is otherwise undesired.

If you like that Baldwin, mention your observation to the salesperson and ask that the "wink" be corrected in the prep. (In the store where I worked, that was one of the routine things to check and adjust before the piano went out, but I don't know what the situation is in all stores.) It takes only a few minutes.
