I tune a few rebuilt uprights. None,imho, are as good as a new piano. I would appreciate any comments yea or nay. Thanks

Rebuilt is an abused word, T. I never call my reconditioned pianos "rebuilt", because to me that means everything that can be replaced, is replaced. I think your question is going to be impossible to answer, because I don't believe there are many truly rebuilt uprights out there. I know I have never seen one in my 29 years as a tech........Sam

I agree with Sam. Rebuilt is indeed an abused word. In my 20 years, I have never seen one that has been rebuilt. IMHO it is virtually impossible to rebuilt one. The cost of rebuilding versus the return is simply not worth it.

I've only seen one old upright that had been rebuilt. Everything done, and done nicely. The rebuilder in Texas charged $12,000 for the job, and told the customer it was worth $25,000 when finished.

I think upright actions are more difficult to work with than grand actions. But if you do everything well, I prefer old uprights to new ones.

I have to redo an old upright action that was butchered. There's no way around it. Everything has to be redone.

I prefer the old uprights, too. I did one last year for my sister's 50th b-day present, and it got strings, hammers, bushings, dampers with flanges, plus of course refinished. Did not get bridges, soundboard, pinblock. It makes the hair on my neck stand when I play it. Great bass, just very nice overall.

Bob- RE: that total rebuild that you saw- in your opinion, was it worth $25K, or was the rebuilder trying to justify the fee? I think his fee was right on the money, but I can't believe a $25K appraisal........

What makes a real difference is replacing the springs. They are a bear to do, but it's worth it.
