The section on Steinway 'verdegris' prompts me to mention the mysterious stiffening of centres occasionally on Yamaha pianos. I have experienced hammer-flange centres suddenly stiffening so much that the hammer shank stays raised. On removal of the pin for re-centering, a black carbon-like material appears to have been released. Any explanations?

Is it possible the actions were lubricated with graphite at some time? Graphite can gum up over time, and would look like black carbon.

Just my 2 cents worth: I agree with Bob. I see a lot of Yamahas, so if this was a Yamaha phenomenon, it would be showing up. Definitely could be graphite.......Sam
