Hi All,

Though new here, I just love PWF, especially this forum.

Could anyone help me out with a bit of history of Chicago area restorations in the late '60's and early '70's? Was Lyon & Healy Music Co. the Steinway dealership at that time? Did they have their own re-building shop or did they farm their tech work to others?

The reason I ask, is because I have inherited the piano that was owned by one of the co-owners of L&H Music and L&H Harp Co. and am trying to learn a bit of it's history. It is a Steinway M - 258625 (1929), and as near as I can peg the time, it went through a partial re-build with new action parts and a re-string in the late '60's. The owner and his new bride selected this instrument for their new home, which they moved into in the early '70's.

I have had two technicians tell me that some fine work was done on the action and the hammers are of the weight that was used in '29. Unfortunitally, it does have the damn Teflon bushings.

The thing that I find so interesting, is that the owners selected a vintage piano. I would think that they could have picked anything off the floor if L&H was the Steinway dealership. Maybe it was known, even at the time, that it was not a great period for S&S!

I'm not looking for specifics on this piano, I'm just trying to understand a bit about the climate of the time, and the thinking behind the decision of new versus old, in that era.

Any help or leads would be appreciated.

Thanks,
Marty
