I tune and repair pianos as a hobby. I want to learn how to voice my own pianos to my liking. How would I voice the bass hammers to 1: improve bass tonal resonance? For example I want to improve the sound of my low C, as it sounds slightly "thinner" than the C sharp and B neighbours which sound really rich.
2: I want to remove some high partials ringing in my low E flat.

What are the basic techniques for this?

Any advise would be welcome.

Thank you.

Why not try learning something a bit easier....maybe dentistry or origami? Just call a qualified piano technician and tell him what you want.

Learn to shape hammers. Take and old upright and shape the hammers. Make sure they are even. A flat piece of wood with sandpaper works well. Cut the end of the hammer so it looks like the small end of an egg. Remove all the string grooves. The strike point should beflat and square to the moulding.

Get a voicing tool. Put one needle in it and see what the hammers feel like. Is it hard in the shoulders? The tip? What type of hammers are they? Lacquered, (cold press) or hot pressed?

You might find a hard spot in that Eb. The C I would rough up the string groove lightly with my fingernail. If it changes, then shape the hammers or it will go back to what it sounded like.

If you really want to do it yourself, I'd at least get a tech round to advise face to face, you can quickly wreck a hammer if you're not careful

Thanks for your input. Don't worry - I won't be doing any voicing. I will leave it to my professional technicians. But I hope they can voice the notes to my likings.
