Bill, I don't understand very well how do you spread your temperament out from the initial F3-F4 octave.

For example how do you tune E3?

You say to first tune an octave down from E4 and then to compare the 4th E3-A3 with the 5th E3-B3. Favoring the 5th slightly over the 4th. But what kind of 5th must we strive for?

In your temperament there are several kinds of 5ths, aren't there?

For example let's take the 5th D4-A4. D is +0.9 cents off from ET, and A is 0.0 cents off. So the D4-A4 5th is 0.9 cents narrower than in ET, that is 2.9 cents narrower than pure.

If we proceed the same way for the rest of the 5ths in the temperament octave we'll find their deviations in cents from pure to be:

C-G = -2.7
C#-G# = 0.0
D-A = -2.9
D#-A# = -0.7
E-B = -1.4
F-C = 0.0
F#-C# = -3.0
G-D = -4.2
G#-D# = -1.1
A-E = -2.6
A#-F = -3.1
B-F# = -2.3

So the 5ths in your temperament range from exactly pure in the case of F-C and C#-G# to -4.2 cents from pure in the case of G-D. That is more than twice the tempering in ET.

So to preserve the temperament we have to tune different kinds of 5ths. Don't we?

I'm sorry about your computer. Depending on what happened, there might still be something we could do to attempt to rescue some files (and bring your computer back to life). Let me know if you need some help ;\)

Say it isn't so! Bill is suggesting to compare the beat rates of 4ths and 5ths? (No malice intended, Bill, just a little fun.)

Sorry to hear about your loss. I've been there a few times before, not PC melt-downs but data loss through disk crashes. Not funny. So nowadays I do auto-backups religiously. It's already saved me twice. \:\)

Yes Upright, he's doing so. But he's talking about EBVT not ET!
