On my new Mason BB I noticed that the reflection of objects, while certainly not mirror like as in a true high polish finish, seems clearer than many satin finishes. In other words I can see a fairly clear if not mirror like refection of objects in the piano's finish. Hence, in my mind, it is close to a "semi-gloss" finish.

I asked the person who did some touch up on the piano and he more or less agreed with me. He is a sensational touch up artist but has only done a little refinishing(so is not an expert in this area). He speculated that the piano's finish looked closer to semi-gloss than many other satin finishes because it uses clear lacquer over a black poly base.

I'm interested in opinions on this i.e.

1. Would some people consider the new Mason satin finish fairly close to what would normally be called a semi-gloss finish?

2. If the answer to question #1 is yes, is the reason the one proposed by the touch up person?

Thank you!

P-lover,

Pianos are made with either satin or gloss finishes. Some Glosses are less than others. Some satins more glossy than others. Some ebonies blacker than others, etc.

To make a further distinction would invite trouble from people who want to differentiate between the levels.

Finish materials and application methods change periodically so it is not in the manufacturers interest to get into a contest as to who has the "Glossiest" or the "Most satin" finish. What they turn out today could change tomorrow because of EPA regulations, etc.

Is there a reason to be concerned?

Why would you be confused about my doing this? Different people read different forums so I was hoping to get more replies or other points of view.

It's completely reasonable to ask a question on both of these forums.

I wasn't concerned. I was just curious to see if my perceptions of the Mason finish were correct and why their satin finish was perhaps more shiny.

I like the Mason satin finish a lot.
