I want to check out an older piano. The seller is acting as custodian and doesn't have much info. She did say that a tech's inspection noted a crack in the *middle* of the soundboard. (No info on depth.)

Don't know why, but for some reason I've always assumed that cracks tend to show near the rim.

Any thoughts on whether a central location is more serious?

What's serious about a crack in the soundboard in the first place? If the piano produces sound without buzz????

I would suspect the rest of the piano has been subjected to the extreme climate changes that causes a crack in the soundboard.

If the crack is severe enough and located under a bridge it can effect tuning stability

Thanks for the replies, guys. I'll ask the R.P.T. I work with to go ahead and evaluate this piano.
