I recently inspected a piano for a potential client and found it was a 1996 Grinnell Console (Grinnell Console French Oak 407 Model GB430F, Serial Number 1FDA0247). This piano was in very nice shape. I had difficulty finding any problems with it. The sound was very nice (in need of a tuning though). A bit of regulation here and there was necessary. The hammers were grooved but only to a very minor allowance. The sound of this piano when played sounds very good to me. The buyer liked the sound also.
Problem---The asking price is 1000.00. A price I feel the piano is worth but I have never been in the habit of telling people "Yes" spend YOUR money. I am more inclined to let them know when NOT to waste their money.
The Client offered the asking price of 1000.00 but then someone came in behind them and offered 1100.00 (supposedly). They are now looking for advice from me as to whether or not to go to 1200.00.
What to do...what to do...what would you do?

Thank you

I stay right out of pricing issues, not being much of an expert on economics, market forces, or family dynamics and priorities. If I observe that the piano has had a certain amount of wear, might reasonably be expected to last a certain amount of time, and/or needs $x amount of work to give playing satisfaction, I'm done. Getting into whether someone should pay maybe six or
eight tanks of gas more for a particular piano is beyond me.

Good luck --
