I was just browsing the TunLab site and noticed that they have a free download of TunLab 97 for which there is also a free download of CalCul 8 (which calculates the tuning curve directly from in-harmonicity readings). Anyone have any experience w/this. It certainly looks worth a closer look.

Yes, I used it for quite a while. The plugin generates the tuning curve for you. Follow the instructions carefully to install it. Let me know if you have any questions.

On the other hand, you can also download TuneLab Pro for free, and just have a two-minute pause after every 200 notes or so. It's much more full-featured.

You only need a cheap mike to make it work, like the $5 ones at office supply stores that don't need batteries. It's better to have an external mike with a laptop.

Thanks Cy,
I thought the 'pro' version wasn't free. I'll check it out again.

Well, you're right, Will: it's not free, but you can download it and try it before you buy. The TuneLab 97 version is shareware: he asks something like $34 (which he'll credit you on another purchase, I believe).

I downloaded Tunlab97 but CalCul8 is no longer availabe. That's kind of a disappointment as I had wanted to experiment w/it, but it'll take me awhile just to navigate through TL97. So, I've got enough to keep me entertained for awhile.

Hey CY,

Is there a special way to configure the mic settings on the laptop?

when I play a note on the piano it doesn't register in the computer. the mic does work cuz i tested it on the keyboard amp.

Thanks

I still have the original self-extracting file for Calcul8. If you'd like to have me e-mail it to you, PM me your e-mail address. I *do* find Calcul8 useful in conjunction with TuneLab97.

If it's TuneLab Pro, you'll see a colored bar alternate between red and blue as the mic gets input. If you don't see a colored bar, it's not hearing anything.

You can adjust and test your hardware settings by going to Control Panel | Sounds and Audio Devices and then the Voice tab. Click on the button "Test hardware", and step through the wizard.
