Just curious
but would anyone on this site know who were the plate makers for Steinway before Steinway started making plates in New York?

I don't believe Steinway ever made plates in NY (maybe in the 1800's?). Kelly of Ohio is their longstanding and current plate maker, and is currently owned by Steinway.

Steinway cast plates in their factory until about 1920.

Thanks, BDB. I'd like to see that sometime. I worked in a copper smelter one summer; pretty exciting.

Yes Cy Steinway did cast their own plates in New York. The New York foundry was established in 1871, prior to this it is believed that Steinway outsourced it manufacture. It is this era that my question refers to. Main focus the style 1 cross strung plate Pat 1859 to 1866 to be specific after the square.

I have 2 Style 1's in my shop at the moment.

I'll look on the back of the plate.
There maybe some markings there.

Call Steinway New York.

With the action removed check the left underside of plate just above where the action would be, possible casting of someones name.
I would be interested to hear what you find?
Have checked with S&S NY their records are from 1875.
