I am in the market for a different piano. I have a steinway L 1986 and am currently trying to sell it in order to buy a Steinway "Long" A or vintage B. What are the years that are the most desirable and what are some of the pitfalls that I should avoid. Also, what do you think about the Steinway B built in 1942. Thank you.

I would put it this way based on my observations.
The best years for Steinways are any years EXCEPT for the 70's & 80's which of course was the worst period as far as quality went(i.e., the teflon period was during that time).

A 1942 might be fine but it depends on whether it was rebuilt, how good the rebuilding was, how conscientious the previous owners were about having it serviced, and the sort of climate it has been subject to over the years.

My advice: If you're considering it, better have a tech check it out first.
