Actually Brian, cooking oils and dust are 2 of the main causes of the bass strings sounding and looking bad after years with no string cover. The Edwards cover is made from a good thick wool fabric, and prevents the accumulation of cooking oils and dust from getting into the windings of the bass strings, which is where the damage occurs. Any type of major humidity also compounds the problem.

I do. It does muffle the sound somewhat but I find it to be a very small amount and relatively evenly distributed across the frequency range. I usually remove it when recording (dual mics on booms placed above the piano) but leave it on the rest of the time for two reasons: (1) basic laziness; (2) I don't find it changes the sound enough or in an objectionable way.

Your mileage may vary.

I use a microfiber cloth that I move around with a plastic ruler. Works like a dream.
