Piano tuners,

Thought you might find this thread interesting -- "Looking for a piano tuner - blind Victorian one," on rec.music.makers.piano.

Sounds like quite a challenge. Even more challenging though would be the 150 year old blind tuner looking for us!

No really, I wonder if there were full time piano tuners back then? Victorian or otherwise.

Ho, yes; enormous growth in piano ownership in Britain in Victorian times led to increased demand for tuners. Teachers saw that demand and became tuners because there was more money in it, piano factories taught apprentices tuning last of all in their apprenticeships, as they knew that as soon as they'd got that knowledge they'd be off to earn their fortunes! And as for the ones who just bought themselves a book...! :rolleyes:

Really tuning ones own piano didn't stop till the advent of TV in the fifties. The radio had made some inroads as the new entertainment center of the home but TV just couldn't be turned off to play the piano.
