I am considering the purchase of a recently rebuilt 1895 S&S B, where only the plate,legs/lyre and rim are original. Given the age of the rim and GLUE that holds the laminations together, is it possible for it to deteriorate and fail somehow over time?

To put it another way: How likely is it for the 110 year old rim and plate to last another 100 yrs. assuming proper care/enviornment?

Regards,
Fingers

Plate should last another 200 years. Look at the rim on the underside. If there is any layer separation you can turn the piano upside down and fill with a quality marine grade epoxy. It should last many years. Old hyde glue will fail - especially if exposed to environmental extremes.

I believe that there are Egyptian artifacts that are still held together by the original hide glue. There are certainly harpsichords and clavichords which are still playable after more than 500 years.

There may only be an approximate answer to this question, but when was hide glue last used to manufacture rim?

Thanks for the responses!

I bought the piano.

I will let everyone know how it's holding up in 100 years. \:\)

Congrats too!

I almost bought a S&S B from 1886, NY model. It was rebuilt too, but original sound board (repaired, though) which gave me some worries. The Bs from that time have this "old" sound which you can find on old recordings. I like that a lot.

Perhaps you have some photos? How much did you pay for it, BTW (if you don't mind telling us)?

Thomas,
thanks!

I did post pics in a thread on piano forum titled "my new and final? piano" dated Sept. 3

The cost was 70k+ although a trade of my M&H BB offset that .

Regards,
Fingers
