Tuned a 3 year old Boston piano tonight that was 9.6 cents flat. I noticed that many of the
tuning pins in the 3rd, 4th and 5th octaves seemed loose. Even C1 was loose as well as A4.
Temperature in the mid to high seventies and
relative humidity around 58. I took some torque readings on some of the loose pins and some where
as low as 40 inch lbs with others measured 45, 50 and 60 inch lbs.
So what gives- could it be the dry indoor weather
or is there some problem(s) with this block ?
Does anyone know if this has been a problem with the Boston or is a warranty/defect issue ?
The piano is well cared for and was moved
a few miles to its current location where it sat about 10 days before I was called. It seems to me that the torque readings should be up in the 65-70 + range not in the 40's and 50's. Told the clients I will come back to check the pins in a few weeks or if they have a problem before then.
Tuned a Boston 3 weeks ago that had no such pin
problem.

Jimbob,sounds like it's time for a dampchaser.

It is a hard sell most of the time. I believe it would certainly help and would be a good investment. The problem is most people look at spending $500 to $600 as a small fortune- they forget to remember that they spent several thousand for the piano. I have a D/C in my piano and it makes a big difference.
