Does one shim cracks only for cosmetical reasons or does the tone actually improve?

If you have a crack which is buzzing, they can stop it. Otherwise, it's pretty much cosmetic.

If when you shim the crack, the board is dried to 4 or 5% humidity and you artificially crown the board while gluing, when done the board swells up and the pressure results in a "compression crown". This does improve the sound in most cases but is a lot more work than stopping a buzz.
