I have to service a piano damaged by smoke . i have not seen the piano yet but it was described as being in the same room as a fire and full of smoke smell with some cabinet damage. I will know more this week. I would like to hear from other techs about their experience with smoke exposed pianos and what the long term prognosis is. The piano in question is a sentimental spinet. I have been heard that long term pianos exposed to smoke suffer problems down the road such as glue joint failure, rusting etc.

Also- if anyone knows of effective treatments to remove the smoke smell please let me know. Does ozone treatment work ?

Hey JimBob- We have done several over the years. There is a product called "Zep" (comes in liquid form, dilute 50/50 with water) that works very well on smoke. I get mine from a local fire damage specialist; they use it on all the smoky furniture. You probably have such a company in your area; if not, call an insurance company and ask them who does their fire damage work. But your most effective (and cheapest) smoke smell remover is the sun. If you are set up to be able to roll the piano outside on a nice sunny day, you will be amazed at the results. This trick was passed down to me from a man who has been in this business for 4 decades, and does it work. Obviously, use common sense. No direct tropical sunlight, watch the wind gusts, etc.......Sam
