Anne-Sophie Mutter and André Previn Marry in New York

Agence France-Presse - 5 August 2002

BERLIN, Aug. 4 (AFP) — Classical violin soloist Anne-Sophie Mutter has married the conductor, composer and pianist André Previn in New York, her office said on Sunday.

The 39-year-old violinist, whose first husband Detlef Wunderlich died of cancer in 1995, plans to move to Munich in the south of Germany with Previn, 73, a statement said. The two were wed last Thursday.

Born in Germany, Mutter began her career in 1977 under direction of the then-head of the Berlin Philharmonic Orchestra, Herbert von Karajan, before travelling widely in Europe and North America.

Previn conducted his first opera, A Streetcar Named Desire, in 1998 and has received numerous honours, including Germany's Commander's Cross of the Order of Merit and a Grammy Award for best chamber music recording.

He was knighted by Queen Elizabeth II in 1996.

Mutter and Previn have performed extensively together this year. She was part of the London Symphony Orchestra he directed in June and July, and the pair later played several dates in Germany in a trio with Daniel Müller-Schott.

The Previn Violin Concerto, which he composed for Mutter, premiered with the Boston Symphony Orchestra in March.

Wow. That IS a surprise indeed. I didn't even know they were an item. Gawd, she married an old coot.

Hi Andrew! How are you? What are you and your daughter playing nowadays?

Regards,
Joy

Yes Andrew....just where have you been? We've missed you. I just got a very interesting recording of the Chopin preludes. Now the CD is in my car; and I know I'm going to spell the pianist's name wrong, and I HATE that. Porgelich (?) Rhythmically he does some unusual things. But I'm starting to enjoy this recording. What do you think. And I KNOW you've heard it! \:D

Yes Joy,

Thanks for asking. I have tapered quite a bit from posting here due to several reasons. Anyay, Phoebe is busy polishing up her next recital with another young boy of the same age. I'm trying to push harder for her to practice more INTELLIGENTLY in her Scarlatti Sonata in Dm and the Mozart 'Kiddy' Sonata, K.545 in addition to a few other pieces like two Czerny studies of Op.299, etc. I'm still debating with the idea of 4-hand pieces...

Eldon,

if you're talking about the DG Chopin 24 Preludes yes I happen to own this disc. Pogorelich has his moments to convince and impress but overall this is not an outstanding set. My personal all-time favorite is by Russian pianist Victor Merzhanov recorded around '60. For No.1 the 'opener' it seems only him and Pollini pulled it off right. Few others seem to have a handle on this 'breath' & 'surge' which is the trade-mark of this little gem in C major. Of course this is just my opinion...

BTW, have you heard Pogorelich's relatively recent CD of Chopin 4 Scherzi? How do you like it?

Rgds,
AndrewG
