From the Boston Herald

"Red Sox fans' playoff dreams have been dashed yet again, but the drive to exorcise the 84-year-old curse that hangs over the team is getting a big boost.

A Cape Cod expert who is nationally known for unearthing submerged parts from airline crashes has agreed to help locate Babe Ruth's piano, which many believe was lodged deep under the muck of Willis Pond in Sudbury in 1918 - the last year the Red Sox won the World Series.

``If he can find an airplane at the bottom of the ocean, he's not going to miss a piano at the bottom of the lake if it's there,'' said Eloise Newell, director of the Restoration Project, a nonprofit vocational rehabilitation group that teaches the mentally ill skills to refinish furniture.

The Restoration Project has teamed up with volunteer divers over the past year for several unsuccessful attempts to find the elusive piano.

Now John Fish, an expert who helped salvage pieces of TWA flight 800 off New York in 1996, is slated to bring his know-how and high-tech gadgets to Sudbury in mid-October.

Using a boat with sophisticated sonar equipment, Fish will slowly troll the one-mile-wide pond and be able to create a detailed picture of the bottom that can instantly be beamed to monitors on the boat.

Legend has it the Babe's piano ended up in the pond during the winter of 1918, when Ruth - then a member of the Red Sox - was renting a waterfront cabin with his wife. But believers say the Sox's losing curse may finally be broken if the piano is found and restored.

``The history books say it's there,'' Newell said. ``There are no records of it coming up but there are records of it going down.''
"To announce that there must be no criticism of the president, or that
we are to stand by the president right or wrong, is not only unpatriotic and servile, but is morally treasonable to the American public."-- Theodore Roosevelt

Weird --- and thank-you.

And all this time I thought that the Red Sox went almost all the way to the World Series most years and then gave it up near the end just to be "good sports."

Not only that but they have a web site! http://www.restorationproject.org/babe.htm

But seriously, this is a great small, local group who run a furniture refinishing shop with the mentally ill. I have them in my address book in case I should need work done. The Babe project is good publicity to steer folks to the real mission, helping folks in need.

Don't you just love routing for the underdog?

Life is like a roll of toilet paper...the closer you get to the end, the faster it goes!
