I don't know if anyone's posted notice of it yet, but a new book out might be of interest to folks here on Piano World. The book is "The Piano Tuner" by Daniel Mason. You can read a review of the book online HERE

Excerpt from the review: "At the center of Daniel Mason's remarkable debut novel is a strange and haunting image: a beautiful grand piano - an 1840 Erard in a black mahogany veneer with a delicate mother-of-pearl inlay of flowers on its name board - standing in the tropical wilderness of 19th-century Burma, an artifact of both imperial hubris and something more mysterious and transcendent. Around this image, Mason - a 26-year-old medical student who spent a year studying malaria on the Thai-Myanmar border - has constructed a gripping and resonant novel, a novel that's at once a harrowing adventure story, an old-fashioned Bildungsroman and an elliptical meditation on the storytelling process itself. "The Piano Tuner" is clearly indebted to two great classics - "The Odyssey" and Conrad's "Heart of Darkness" - but in the end, it manages to spring free from these models to become something new...a riveting narrative, spangled with fascinating asides about everything from the ancient history of Burma to the history of Erard pianos to the mathematical mysteries of Bach. In doing so, he has written a seductive and lyrical novel that probes the brutalities and compromises of colonization, even as it celebrates the elusive powers of music and the imagination."

Looks like a good read --and I'm hoping to find a copy at the bookstore this evening.

Cheers, N

Another good read is "The Piano Shop on the Left Bank"[/b] by T.E. Carhart (Chatto & Windus, London 2000). To quote from the blurb:

" . . . In this wonderfully atmospheric book, full of Parisian life, the story of a musical friendship and a mutual obsession is intertwined with reflections on how pianos work, their glorious history and the people who care for them, from the most amateur pianists to the tuners and craftsmen who make the mechanism sing."
