I LOVE composing - are there any others out there? Sadly, I have a very busy other job, and never have enough time to write, but am working hard on trying to get some of my stuff heard! If so, what instruments do people compose for? What styles do you write?

I compose for piano and orcheastra. I also LOVE to compose. What software do you use? If you want to hear my compositions go to

http://www.finalemusic.com/showcase/fs_home.asp

and search for Evan Duffy.

I compose classical music. I always write too. Besides actually playing, it is my favorite thing to do (though ive only been composing for about 3 months.)

I use Cubase at the moment, but I am thinking of changing - is Finale good? I have had a break from composing, and have only just started again over the past month or so. Can I hear your music on the Finale Showcase site if I don't have Finale?

you can download the free Finale Notepad first, and then download the mus files you want to listen to from the Finale showcase site. after that, you open the mus files from the notepad and play it there.

You can download the Finale Demo, or finale notepad as Signa said.

I'm a composer...but I don't know where to host my music. I made a few MIDIs for a video game my friend and I are trying to make. I'm also working on a piece called Impromptu in Minor Keys.

Hello,

I'm a bit behind as I've been bogged down in career changes at the mo, but this is an interesting q; maybe we should ask for a composition forum?

I got really interested in composing whilst doing A-Level music but elected for a scientific career hoping that I'd be able to keep the music up alongside.

At A-Level I got into the Bach Brandenburgs and composed a pastiche concerto grosso movement which my physics teacher helped me synthesize and notate with cubase.

As an undergraduate and prior to uni I was an organ scholar and wrote various pieces of "utility" church music for choir/organ. I directed a choir for 5 years, so we performed my music in a liturgical setting on a weekly basis, which was a privilege. I used a German prog called Capella just for notation, which is simple but good at what it does.

I also lived with a guy who composed trance-type stuff and I found that the harmonic language I used for psalm-tones (!) really wowed him and his band when played on a Korg synth with some trancey extras.

These days I don't find the time and it really irritates me. I miss the creative outlet even though I play piano/organ/guitar/violin a lot. I have a copy of Sibelius tho and when I stop being a student and get a proper job (September) maybe I'll have enough money for some kit!

Richard

Well,

I am much older than most on the forum, but I have a background in composition for churches and have made supplemental income from it, as well as some simple adds on radio/tv...

I compose in real time on keyboard, or on grand piano.

However in the past, I did a lot of writing in longhand, and composition on paper only. It is with the advent of sequencing that we are able to write directly on the keyboard, and it is not always a good thing, for those who don't understand the theory needed. Theory is essential..

Check .."CD Baby" for a place to "publish" your music for a beginning place that is fairly easy to get on and handle...

I also agree that a composition group would be a very nice addition to the forum.!! \:\)

Best, John Cont

Hi, I discovered this forum only very recently, and I compose and play the viola. I've written for the piano ever since I started composing. Being a violist I write frequently for string groups (string quartet and string orchestra etc.) I've never found it particularly easy to describe the style of my own music, but there are quite a few recordings on my own website. The URL is: www.nigelkeay.com

Hi everybody,

I have been a freelance composer and music teacher for years and have written quite a bit.
Some of my music is on my website:

www.trevsmusic.com

There is a lot of music for brass bands there and a bit for piano and various ranges and combinations of instruments. Have a look over there and see if you like it.

Good to see fellow composers here though.

Cheers
