For the scientific set, this may be of interest: "Using only the simplest formulas, Purdue physicists have successfully produced a mathematical model of their most complex musical instrument to date...Nick Giordano, professor of physics, leads a team of student researchers that use Newton's laws of motion to precisely describe the function of a piano...The physicists are particularly concerned with the materials used to make the piano, said Giordano. The researchers try to isolate the parts of the piano that make individual instruments sound different; they want to know why a piano sounds the way it does...The project has been a result of the combined efforts of a group of several undergraduates and graduate students who created realistic sound simulations based on their mathematical calculations alone.
