Are you using the (USB to device) terminal that the switch is set to (A or B - page 58 of the manual)

If you're using a card reader with the files on a card you might have problems as the clavinova can't see more than one drive (card readers normally allocate a drive letter to each card slot)

I'm assuming the files you're trying to load are in stadard midi format and you're following the instructions on page 42 of the manual?

Try the following suggestions:

1) Have you checked if the USB port of the CLP 240 is used for MIDI exclusively or for BOTH USB-MIDI (data signal transmit/receive) and save file function (SMF or yamaha-recorded proprietary file format)? It might be possible that the USB port maybe specifically used only for MIDI-USB implemenation and not for saving file. Or, it may be used for both MIDI-USB function and save file function but the settings of your DP need to be modified in a menu function or something, if there's any.

2) Is your USB drive capacity supported? (i.e. 128MB/256MB...1GB or 2GB). Majority of DP manufacturers would set a limit as to the smallest capacity and highest capacity of USB flash drives that can be used with their models. It might be that you're using a capacity which is not supported by the DP.

3) Usually, DP manufacturers include a "format" function for their SD-card/USB flash drive feature. Try USING the built-in "format" function of the CLP 240 (if there's any) on your flash drive and then try saving files again.

4) Also, DP manufacturers would provide some sort of USB drivers in the accompanying CD that comes with the DP. Try installing these first. Then try connecting your DP to your PC and try saving files.

5) Try changing the brand of your USB flash drive. It might be that the DP is a bit "picky" or choosy in the type of USB flash drive that it uses. This is still a possibility though.

If all else fails, then it's time to have the USB-port or even the unit checked by a technician.

Hope these suggestions help.

Dear Cumbria
Thanks for the reply. I am trying to load to the usb device a couple of my own compositions which have been saved somewhere in the piano memory.I am using "USB to device" Switch to A on the keyboard(ie USB 2gb Memory stick )which has been formatted and have followed, I think the manuals instructions but again to no avail.

John, i have no difficulties with saving files from my CLP-240 to a USB stick:

USB to device Switch to A on the keyboard is correct.
When your USB stick is OK the 'LOAD'-light on your piano flashes for several seconds after you powered up the Clavinova or when you put the stick in, until connection is ready. ( For me 12 seconds with my 2 GB stick)

1. Midi files (.mid) i downloaded from the net and copied to my 2 GB USB stick are OK: the Clavinavo does play them nicely.

However there is something special about the order in which they are played back you have to know, read my topic here:

http://www.pianoworld.com/ubb/ubb/ultimatebb.php?/topic/6/4112.html#000000

2. Saving the 3 USER-songs:

- You first played and RECORDED the songs to the pianomemory (in U01,U02,U03) as described on page 29.

- Then you SAVE (in fact copied: they stay in the pianomemory) them from the pianomemory to the USB stick in .USR format as described on page 36 :

You press FILE until you have SAVE/EXP lit. Then press and hold FILE again while you press YES once. You first get A00 and if you want another number A01, A02, ... you keep on holding FILE and press several times YES until you reach the number you want. Remember that a number with dots ( like A.0.4 ) is a number that is not free.
Then you release the FILE button and you select Y (yes) to save or n (no) to abort.

If you load them back, they overwrite the User songs in the pianomemory (page 42) and you play them back as written in page 41.

3. Exporting a song to the stick in SMF format (Standerd Midi File).

You select the user song as written on page 37 then you press FILE until you have SAVE/EXP. then press and hold FILE again while pressing YES/NO simultanously. You first get A00 then you keep pressing FILE and press NO: you get S99 and then you press NO until you reach the number you want to use.

- On your computer you wil now find a map called 'USER FILES' on the USB stick with the USERFILExx.USR and/or USERSONGxx.SMF files in it.
