I'm new here - a trumpeter who wants to dust off his long-forgotten piano skills.

I don't have space or sufficient acoustic isolation from my neighbour for an acoustic piano. I have seen a used Clavinova CLP-411 for sale and I am tempted.

Can anyone offer any comments on this model? Recommendations or reasons to avoid it? Any potential problems I should look out for? What would you be prepared to pay for one (preferably in the UK market).

Thanks for listening.

Hi Simon,

Firstly on price, I would say don't pay more than 300 max.

I would avoid this model however, the reasons being mainly that the newer technology available nowadays is far superior in the two most important piano elements, touch and sound.

On touch, the 411 has got the Yamaha 'action-effect' keyboard which, IMO, is inadequate for someone wanting to practise piano. In comparison to the latest 'graded hammer effect' keyboards, it is not as responsive, there is no difference in weighting from top to bottom on the keyboard, and many would find the feel rather 'sluggish', you'd need to try it yourself to judge.

The sound of these pianos nowadays is far more realistic, I wont bog you down with technical detail, but instead I suggest you try the latest models in comparison. You will find really huge improvements.

If you want the most cost effective model, with the new 'graded hammer effect' keyboard, and a really good sound, go for the Yamaha P120. (approx 800)

Good luck! \:\)

If you do decide to go for the 411 however, you should find no problems in terms of reliability, just check all the keys are in working order.
