Hi,

I don't know if anyone else is getting this problem, but I just got a Yamaha P-120 last week and there's a constant 'hissing', crackling static noise on the right channel (and only the right channel - the left channel seems ok). I can hear it through the built-in speakers and through my headphones. It's there at any volume, and it crackles at the same low volume no matter what volume I set it at. It's not patch-specific - I've tried every patch I know of - and I've even done a factory reset. It's slowly driving me insane. If it really comes down to it, I'm going to take it somehwere to get it fixed, but I'm going to be really disappointed in Yamaha...

Anyway, I'd appreciate any help/experience on this matter. Thanks!

Unfortunately, that may be what I end up doing... Yamaha support told me to take it to a service center, but it's only a week old! I'm extremely disappointed with Yamahas now... Made in Japan? Yeah, right. Built like a tank, except for that one manufacturing defect that causes insanity. Guitar Center better take it without argument, because I'm on the edge...

If anyone has another solution which beats exchange/repair, please let me know.

(sorry, when a poor college student invests everything he has into a defective product, extreme anger may result.)

i'd take it in and test it there with them. definitely think you;re entitled to your money back or an exchange. it might be a faulty batch, my teacher told me he once bought one new and returned it, yamaha had to take back the entire batch they were all faulty, if the store is unhelpful speak to yamaha direct. goodluck.

Qcvar -

I am sorry to hear about yout problem.

I can tell you this, we have sold hundreds of P120's and have had zero warranty issues (I actually checked our records). Its unfortunate you received one of the few bad ones.

Please consider exchanging it and give Yamaha a second chance!

Definately defective.
Get it repaired or exchange it, keep in mind that this is a rare occurrance though.

I bought a P120s at Guitar Center about a month ago. I have used it every day with no problem.

You should return it right away, or at least contact them to tell them about the problem.

When I bought mine I talked to them for a while about their service. The reason I bought there rather than over the internet was that I wanted to be sure I could go directly to them with any problem.

They know this is the advantage they have over the internet competition - make good use of it.

Hi everyone, I am new here, but I have been following the forum pretty regularly for a long while. When I saw this post, I remembered hearing about this same problem before on the Keyboard Player magazine forum.
Check it out:

uhhm here's a thought.. anyone using or carrying a cell phone near the keyboard???

I get static now and then on most of my stuff and it's from my sons cell phone who is upstairs from where I play most of the time! so not just in the room, but in adjoining rooms too.. something to think about! if your in a dorm and some one is on the cell phone all the time could be your trouble.. Move it somehwere else away from everyone that could be using a cell phone, and see what happens

it's not a perfect world. i've been a working musician for over 25 years. I've had lots of yamaha stuff, that stuff has been beyond reliable.

a few guitar amps I used for 100s and 100s of gigs over 20 years, not too mention truck loads of pa gear and other gig essential stuff.

sorry for your troubles

At least know that you have I think 30 days to take it back, no questions asked. ask for another and check it out in the store before you go home. They will not hassle with you especially if all you want is an exchange..

kidblast - Well, turning on my cell phone from five feet away causes the right speaker to explode in a huge buzzing pop. It makes the same extremely loud noise when I turn it off or make a call. When I'm not doing this, the soft, piercing static is constantly there to drive me insane. This is definitely not normal, as none of this happens to the left speaker. I'm guessing it's a lack of shielding on internal components or something. Either way, it's not my problem. Everyone's carrying a cell phone around my dorm, and it's absolutely impossible to get away from them at a place like Stanford.

C# Minor - Thank you for the links, but the noise that I'm getting is static no matter what volume I set it at. I'd be willing to live with noise if I slid my volume slider up all the way. But not this. This... is insanity.

Christopher P. Smith - I trust Yamaha to make quality products; my family has had a stand up acoustic Yamaha for 15 years, and it has worked perfectly with tuning for all that time. That was a huge factor in my getting a Yamaha P120. I love the P120, but I'm just somewhat disappointed now.

Going off to exchange it this weekend.

well it was an idea! sounds like you got a duff..

Good Luck Qcvar - I'm sure GC will exhcange that with no problems at all.. as long as ya don't let it slide past their "return policy" time window.

Yeah, it happens. Had an issue with the keybed of my P250... and waited past the date where I could've just exchanged it, so I had to get it repaired which took a long time.

Since you're within 7 days, they should just exchange it with no probs. Just don't delay!
