Roland KF-7 Digital Intelligent Piano

I can purchase one of these MINT (2005) for $1200.

Any opinions would be greatly appreciated.

This is apparently expensive, around $3500,
with many impressive features, and yet
a 2005 digital piano is ancient in the
fast-moving digital piano world. Digital
pianos are essentially computers and
follow computer-like pricing: a 2005-vintage
pc, even one that cost $3500 new, couldn't
sell for $1200 used today. And so $1200
might be too high for this, even in supposedly
mint condition.

The argument against paying $1200 is: it's
out of warrantly; the 2005 model might not
have the same specs as the current model;
there might be something wrong with it that
a person unfamiliar with the model would
be unable to detect upon a cusory examination;
it's difficult to sell any used piano, because
there are few players in the general population,
so the seller is going to have a hard time
moving this and is really at your mercy--
a pawn shop would give him almost nothing
for it; in practical, real-world playing,
all those bells and whistles might not
get used after a while, and you'll end up using
it mostly like a regular piano. So you
might try offering less than $1200, maybe
half price and then work up from there--unless
it just knocks you over, and you feel that
you simply have to have it.

Gyro, This is an awesome price for this piano. I love the Roland KF7. It has an incredible hammer action, great piano sound, and is by no means "ancient". It was way ahead of it's time with features like touchscreen, 1 button Digiscore (scores anything you play with 1 button push), and comes with some of the best organ, guitar, strings, choir sounds I have ever heard on a digital piano. If you can get this for $1200 buy it. It's a steal at that price.

Things don\'t move that fast in the DP world. Computers have faster, smaller chips, new technologies like PCI Express, faster graphics cards, E SATA etc etc - the goalposts are always moving. Pianos, relatively speaking, don\'t change that much - maybe a slightly different key action (which you might like better or worse), a few more functions, but aesthecially and sonically they evolve slowly rather than reinvent themselves.

Thanks for your feedback. I ended up purchasing for $1299. But it is an awesome DP. I don't even know if I will use all the features. But the great keyboard, piano sounds and the other great sounds (so easy to access thru the large touch screen) alone are worth the price.

I must also disagree with Gyro. I don’t think you can generalize about all used DPs. I don’t think you can by a DP today like the KF7 for less than $2500 or more. I think I was fortunate that it was not a well known model. But as soon as I saw it (looks new) and played it I new I was about to get a great deal. The person I purchased it from bought it from a Roland dealer in 2005 for $3700. I think it retailed for close to 6k.

I still think there are good deals to be had on used digitals (eBay), but most are local pickup only. I drove 2 hours to pick this one up. It was well worth it. I also had my eye on a used Technics. Technics stopped making DPs a while ago. But from what I remember they made some of the best DPs on the market.
