Hello, I'm new to the boards. I currently have a Casio PX 110. I'm thinking of upgrading to a Yamaha CLP 230, I might go with a CLP 220. In your opinion is upgrading worth the money. The casio is alright, I have fun playing it. The sound and clunky keys are really starting to bother me.

TIA

You can upgrade the sound, if you don't mind using an external PC. There's nothing you can do about the keys, if you don't like them. Only you can gauge if CLP touch is worth the upgrade.

If you do decide to upgrade to the CLP, I would try to hold out till you could stretch to a 240 or above, there is a marked improvement on the sound from 240 upwards.

In my opinion it would not be worth the money.
Your current piano is okay and it's
fun to play--now, what more could you
ask for than that? The "sound and
clunky keys" that are "starting to
bother you" now, I suspect you didn't
notice when you first got it--after all,
all digitals are modeled after a concert
grand piano. What's apparently happened is that
your playing has improved to some extent,
but not to the degree you'd like, so
you blame it on the piano. If you got
a more expensive digital, you'd go
through much the same process: initially
it would sound great; but after playing
it a while and not making the
progress you expected from the
more expensive instrument (you can't
improve your playing by getting a more
expensive piano), the sound and key action
would begin to seem flawed and you'll
start to think of "upgrading" to an
acoustic grand piano; and so forth.

I'd suggest you also play the Roland HP and FP pianos. Great piano sound, great keyboard feel.

A hammered piano, minus the strings. Brilliant!

i agree that CLP240 and above is the way to go, otherwise, you're not significantly upgrading your piano. i wouldn't consider CLP220 at all, and the minimum that i'd consider is a CLP230.

Hi Gyro, I hardly ever post but I read your comment and you are dead spot on. You must know me personally ha ha, cuz what you stated is exactly the conclusion that I have come to concerning myself. I have owned a Yamaha DGh or something like that, a Roland rd700sx, then a Samick upright acoustic and a Casio PX575r, both of which I still own. Yea, I bet I could really sound better if I had me a Grand. Sure the piano will sound better, but I won't play better. My neighbor and friend has a Stienway 7 footer that I played a few weeks back. The piano had a great sound but my playing still sounded crappy. I expect too much from myself after only a year of playing. No matter what the instument, it still takes practice, time and talent. My biggest regret is not keeping the 700sx and just taking back that terrible sounding amp(roland 550 keyboard amp. Horrible sound)

Hehehe. That's funny. Come to a digital piano forum and ask if you should upgrade...

Of course the possibilities are endless:
  • Hell no, I wouldn't upgrade
  • Nah, pianos cost too much. keep the one you have...
  • Rintincop says Rolands are better than Yamaha
  • Try some headphones. Maybe yours sounds good and you just can't really tell
  • Just make sure to get one where there's no lag between keys and sound
  • I would go back and practice more before getting a nice piano
  • Heck yea I would upgrade, and go for the PE model!

I'm not sure what you mean by "clunky keys". If you mean a noticeable thump as the keys go up and down, that is normal. My Clavinova CVP 301 does that, and it is especially noticeable when someone is playing on headphones, or you wind the volume down.

But I also have a 6' Kawai grand, and that is worse! I went to a concert recently and sitting 10 rows back, I could hear the clunking from the keys in the treble -- this was a Steinway D.

As Gyro said, most digitals are modeled on grands. Grands do have a lot of mechanical noise, so you can expect at least some of that in a digital.

A lower cost option than complete replacement is a pair of good quality headphones. Another possible addition is a good amplifier and speaker(s) -- this will improve the sound of just about any digital. If you have a halfway decent stereo system, try that to get an idea of the improvement possible.

Or maybe she's just become more discerning through experience. Some people do upgrade based on personal preference and not because they expect some magical piano to fix all their shortcomings for them. That said I think Gyro does point out a common trap.

If you have the spare cash then just go out and try a few and if you really like one over your existing keyboard and are comfortable with the price they go for it... as long as you're not doing it for the reasons Gyro stated...

I have a Yamaha p120 and it is working very well for me. I realize this is probably out of your price range, but I might suggest to take a look at some of the other Yamaha models.

Of course, if you have the money, I would recommend a Korg keyboard. These are usually more expensive though.
