Hello and thanks for the help or interest...

My father-in-law is cleaning a basement in Chicago and found a 1898 Victor playing piano. It has "Pedals, Pumpers and Rolls". The frame has a serial number of 78887 and the string component has a numbe of 47730. It seems to be in good condition but owner wants it tossed. It appears to have been refurbished in Elmhust in 1989 so it would probably work if it had any music cartridges- can those even be purchased nowadays? Sorry I am not familiar with pianos but I hate throwing away something worthy of saving. Please let me know!

The serial number appears to be the one you see between the bass and treble strings, and corresponds to 1921.

I'm not familiar with the Victors, but Bush & Lane's generally were built very solidly, and so might be worth keeping more than others. Yes, piano rolls can still be bought (http://www.player-care.com ). The last time I tuned a player, the owner tested it with a piano roll of "Bad, Bad Leroy Brown"!

However, everything depends on current condition. "Basement" and "piano" are two words you never want to hear together; the inevitable dampness can destroy them. Let your local tuner appraise it for you (for a small fee).

Have a piano mover move it, what ever you decide; those suckers are heavy! In particular, they're top-heavy; typically there's a person on each end, but they drop them on their backs or keys.
