Rather simple question. Would the Yamaha Motif Rack tone module work well with a Yamaha P60, P90, or P120? Would it function like the Motif Synthesizers, soundwise, when plugged in?

The Motif rack has:

Some new Voices
Double the polyphony of the Classic Motif keyboard
More user slots
More insert effects

However you should be aware that MOTIF-RACK has no sampling facility, no sequencer, no sliders, and no SmartMedia card slot. The lack of SmartMedia slot is offset by the fact that all sounds are stored in Flash RAM and so will be retained on power down.

This module will work with any MIDI controller keyboard or synth/digital piano with MIDI out (including the Pxxx series digital pianos).

I had both and the problem is that the P120/P90 do not send a full wide range of velocity via MIDI Out, so the Motif rack sounds muffled. Yoiu have to pravcticly hit the keys with a hammer to get into the upper range. You can edit the range but yiu have to scarifice the lower range then. It's never ideal.

The benefit of a Mo rack for me is that it has better Rhodes EP pianos.

I would say it would work well for a P250, which appears to have good MIDI implementation (I use it as a master controller in a moderately complex project studio), and also just looking at it, you can tell it was designed for master control purposes in addition to being an excellent stage piano. I'm controlling a Korg Triton (which is very similar to the motif) among other things.

I agree. The P250 provides flexible configurations for controlling external devices including slider, foot controller, and mod wheel assignments to drive the volume throughout the entire 1-127 midi range - which should benefit those who are not happy with the somewhat limited velocity curves.
