I recently joined a choir.I haven't done any singing since college and being now retired, that was a long time ago. I have decided that in order to improve my singing I need an instrument to tap out the baritone parts that I am rehearsing and record the notes so that I can play them back to reinforce my learning. I have decided that a digital piano might serve the purpose of enhancing my learning. I am learning to read music and I plan to take lessons to learn to play the piano. I'm sure it is obvious that I am starting an ambitious program to accomplish my education in music. My immediate challenge is to learn as much as I can about a digital piano: its features, quality manufacturers, price.

I shall greatly appreciate any advice, information, experiences, that one might provide to assist me in my quest.

On digital pianos now days there are three major players:

Roland, Yamaha and Kawai.

Check out the Kawai CN-290 that is a nice digital piano.
At very reasonable price.

John,

I suggest you also look at the Roland and Yamaha line. Both have excellent offerings in their Home Piano lines, which are separate from their keyboard and synth lines. Yamaha's Clavinovas are wonderful as are Roland's KR line of digitals.

John, The Clavinova can be found at Oren Music, the Roland Line at Jordan Kitt's Music. Both have stores in Fairfax. Jordan Kitt's is right off of Gallows Rd. If you go there, ask for Dave or Chris and tell them Luke's Dad sent you!

Yamaha (and possibly others) offers two types of digital pianos: clavinova, sold in piano stores, and the ydp and p-series (ydp-113, ydp-223, p60, p90, p120, etc...) sold in discount music stores (like guitar center, sam ash, etc...). Pricing on clavinovas is often much higher than that of similar gear in the p-series, and they often have similar action and sound.

Also, piano store pricing requires bargaining down from the manufacturer's suggested retail price, while the discount stores pretty much all offer the same prices well below msrp. Also, the prices for the p-series and ydp-series are easy to find online.
